Procedural Spine

A creature that follows you, rendered head to tail: the head is final, the tail is still wireframe.
  • Move the pointer or drag a finger to lead it
  • Tap to coil
  • Segments and render blend sliders
  • Pause

How How it is made

The wireframe of it.

  1. Sixty vertebrae follow the leader at a fixed distance, so the body bends like a chain, not a rubber band.
  2. All vertebrae and ribs are one instanced draw call. Each instance carries its index, and the shader blends from a barycentric wireframe to a lit surface along the body.
  3. The idea comes from the procedural dragon study in VibeBox Motion, rebuilt here from scratch.

Performance

Two instanced meshes, no textures, one draw call per mesh.

Without WebGL, or with motion set to Still
